  • Slope soil away from foundations to prevent drainage problems.
  • Leave soil down 1-2 inches along curbs and driveways (to prevent scalping when mowing).

Tips on Laying Turf

  • Sod is a living, breathing plant and needs care immediately. It should be installed the same day of delivery.
  • In HOT weather, lay top half of all pallets as you proceed to prevent heating in the middle of the rolls.
  • Select your longest straight edge to start laying. Stagger joints in a brick-like fashion.
  • Keep edges and ends of strips tight together, but be careful not to overlap or stretch the sod.
  • On slopes, place the turf pieces so they run across the slope rather than up and down the slope.
  • On steep slopes, you may need pegs to keep the sod from sliding. Keep pegs in place until first mowing.
  • Use a utility knife to cut or shape the sod. Sod cuts very easily on the dirt side.
  • Install irrigation systems at this stage. Water to reveal uneven spots, then grade to correct them.
  • Use soil to cover any exposed edges of turf when done laying to prevent drying out.
  • You can roll your lawn after laying and before watering to smooth out slight humps. Watering also helps with this.

Watering Your Turf

  • Begin watering at least ½ hour after turf is installed.
  • If you are installing a large area, water sections as you complete them.
  • Foundations and sidewalks tend to draw moisture out of the sod; these spots may need more water.
  • During hot or windy conditions, you may need to water twice a day. If allowed to dry out, the sod pieces will shrink and gaps will be left along the joints.
  • Once lawn is established, give it a thorough watering 1-2 times a week. Grass will develop a blue-grey tinge if thirsty.
